The history of the popular brand Gant goes back to Jewish immigrant Bernard Gantmacher, who arrived in the USA in 1918 from Ukraine. He started in a factory that specialized in sewing shirt's collars. Having met his wife here, they began to design casual shirts with a more relaxed cut intended for young people.

Their sons, together with their cousin, set up a family business in 1949. While they delivered shirts initially, later on they focused on their own brand, which became famous for the quality and originality of men's shirts. Their renowned tailoring innovations are, for example, a loop between the shoulder blades for hanging the shirt or the pleats on the back, providing greater freedom of movement. 

The family sold the successful brand in 1967. It currently belongs to the Swiss company Maus Fréres.
